With so many of us relying on technology to keep us connected to classrooms right now, the timing couldn’t be better to debut the latest collaborative effort between OHP and local students. This spring the ScoutSA team partnered with the Public History program at St. Mary’s University to complete a challenge with 9 students enrolled in a course titled Public History in the Digital Age.  Dr. Lindsey Wieck, Assistant Professor of History and Director of the Public History Graduate Program at St. Mary’s University, challenged her students to produce an innovative digital project for the Office of Historic Preservation on an intense 8 week timeline. The hands-on service learning work mimicked what might be asked of them in potential future roles in the field of digital humanities, as employees of cultural resource management firms or museums.

Based on the City’s database of historic sites, including landmarks and districts, and their own original research, the students produced four distinct, extraordinary Story Maps. We encouraged them to bring a critical and nuanced perspective, and from there stepped back as the students proposed topics and formed teams to address their research questions with nuance and professionalism. While we hoped to premiere the results at our Preservation Month Kick-off event in May, we are excited to be able to share them with you now!
